I was blown away by the supreme elegance of the 1998 Rocche dell'Annunziata. It presents the characteristic open, perfumed nose so typical of Rocche, along with a lovely core of sweet cherry fruit on a medium-bodied frame with outstanding length and fine, silky tannins. Some of the baby fat has melted away and the oak has begun to integrate, signaling that this wine has started to enter its early maturity although it remains quite youthful and packed with plenty of vibrant fruit. 93 points Wine Advocate The 1998 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is the best of the series, very complete in its presentation of the classic range of anisette, rose petal, iris, and red fruit sensations, ample, round, and fresh in flavor, minty and lingering on the close, caressing but solid in texture. Paolo Scavino 酒莊於1921年由Lorenzo Scavino 所創立,之後Alfonso和 Paolo兩兄弟繼承了葡萄園,並於1943年把父親位於Castiglione Falletto產區的葡萄園一分為二,Paolo 取名為 Paolo Scavino繼而傳給現任莊主 Enrico Scavino,另一兄弟Alfonso則另外命名為 Azelia 酒莊。

 

Enrico 於父親過世之後繼承釀酒事業,雖然跟著父親釀酒甚久,但並不像其他酒莊的第二代一樣完全追隨父親的傳統方式釀酒,反而為了提升酒的品質而轉為現代派,在1993年是當地第一個大膽採用溫控不銹鋼發酵和現代化釀酒設備,並以全新小橡木桶取代Slavonian大橡木桶,是Piemonte裡唯一不在大型橡木桶中藏酒的酒莊,而且是使用循環發酵的先驅者。在當時這大膽的徹底轉變讓 Enrico成為Barolo新派的領導者,但與其說這些轉變就是 Enrico的固定模式,其實這其間的革新反而是實驗性質的成份比較大。

 

在1998年僅僅經過幾年的改變後,Scavino又搬回了 Slavonian 大橡木桶,為了讓酒有更好的平衡感,發酵後把酒一年存放在小橡木桶中,一年放在大橡木桶中,他堅信唯有如此才能釀出更好的 Barolo,並把發酵期多延長2-3天,這些改變其實是讓Scavino 的酒降低了對釀酒方式的依賴,而轉為只要專心的在葡萄園裡種出更好的葡萄,並嚴格的疏果以降低產量以提高葡萄品質。

 

Paolo Scavino酒莊在11個Barolo的村莊裡有19個自有葡萄園,其中有18個葡萄園是屬於Grand Cru等級,釀出7種不同的 Barolo酒款,直到1978年Enrico才推出4種單一葡萄園Grand Cru酒款— Bric del Fiasc、Cannubi、Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva和 Briccco Ambrogio。

Enrico Scavino 毫無疑問的是Piedmont裡長久以來品質最一致的釀酒人,他決不容許有絲毫的閃失,並提出釀出的酒要優雅細緻及清新脫俗的純粹派新觀念,Enrico的兩個女兒Enrica and Elisa接繼承接衣缽幫忙父親釀酒,長久以來對品質的堅持讓 Paolo Scavino酒莊已成為Barolo裡的重量級選手,也是世界上最頂級的酒莊之一。
